Last weekend we took Roo to see some friends who adore him (and who happen to be the parents of a whole slew of kids we adore) and spent a few days on Fire Island. It was the first time he’d been to the beach. Now, this kid is a water baby through and through – he screams in delight when you turn on the tab and strip off his diaper – but this was something else.
He took one look at the waves and lost his little mind. Squealing. Face planting in the sand. Chasing the waves as fast as he could as they washed back out. Drinking mouth fulls of salt water and then sputtering and laughing at the same time. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a human being have so much fun without drugs.
And then there was this week. NSG left her job (this was planned but still a transition). My job was unexpectedly chaotic and stressful, partially in that pre-vacation way and partially in that my-contract-manager-is-an-asshole way. NSG’s sister was a big pain in the tush, which is not new, but her MO this week was particularly exhausting and aggravating. Even Roo was in on the starry misalignment, pitching over the guard rail today and ending up with a fat black eye.
But tomorrow… Can’t wait. See you when we get back!

Adoption probe traps babies.
This orphanage has been shut down under allegations of baby stealing and baby-selling.
I can’t figure out from this article exactly what’s happening. On the surface, it looks like the orphanage was shut down to protect women whose children are becoming available for adoption against the will of the moms. But the DNA evidence, at least according to this one article, doesn’t seem to support that.
Anyone have a better understanding of any of this?

I’ve got a book review up over at Open Adoption Support. Go read it.
If you’ve already read b-mother, what did you think?

Tonight was our anniversary (3 years, baby – though isn’t it kind of funny to celebrate the anniversary of a big party?), and we went to see Erin McKeown, who we both happen to think is one of the most talented songwriters and performers out there these days.
It is impossible – im-possible, my friends – to be in a bad mood after listening to this song (the link is for lyrics but you really should do yourself a favor and go get it over at iTunes too). If Roo had been a girl we would have given him the middle name Estelle because of this song.
Plus, she rocks the t-shirt and tie look, which would make most adult women look more high than hip.
She has this whole schtick where she kind of talks like she’s 80 instead of 30 (if you’ve seen her, you know this is funny, not as annoying as it sounds). So when she introduced one particular song she mentioned that she was celebrating her 37th wedding anniversary, and that she wanted to share this song because it was her one secret to a happy marriage:
You were right about everything.
I think she’s onto something there.

Summer favorites… see any themes here? (Click to enlarge)
(Two of these are my neighborhood. One is where we spent our honeymoon. Any guesses?)
